Instrument review challenge
A final checklist over palette, roles and density, with a diagnosis table for arrangements that come back wrong.
The palette checklist
- Three to five instruments are named, not more.
- They come from at least three different families.
- The rhythm section is stated: kit, bass and feel.
- A lead instrument is identified, and only one.
- Each named instrument has a role you could say out loud.
- Density is capped or the word
sparse/fullappears. - The acoustic–electric–electronic mix is stated, with a ratio if hybrid.
- At least one arrangement change happens across the song.
- Any unwanted category is excluded explicitly.
Diagnosis

Self-test
- Build a four-instrument palette with no two from the same family.
- State a rhythm section in three phrases: kit, bass, feel.
- Assign all five roles to a six-instrument arrangement and justify the doubling.
- Write a hybrid acoustic/electronic ratio in one phrase.
- Write a six-line arrangement arc from intro to final chorus.
That completes genre, vocals and instruments. The remaining levers — mood, structure and production — build on exactly the same discipline: name the slot, fill it once, change one thing at a time.

Practice
Run the nine-point palette checklist over every prompt you have written in this unit, then pick the single prompt that fails the most boxes and rebuild it from scratch using the checklist as a template rather than as a review. Generating the rebuilt version alongside the original is the clearest demonstration you will get that arrangement discipline, not instrument choice, is what separates a clear track from a crowded one.

How many instruments is too many?
Beyond six named instruments you lose the ability to tell which cue is working. Use sections ('string section') when you need scale.
